New Rachmaninoff editions by Boosey & Hawkes and Henle
New Rachmaninoff editions by Boosey & Hawkes and Henle are among the first publishing activities since Rachmaninoff's music has come out of copyright. It will be extremely interesting to watch the strategy Boosey & Hawkes will follow. Of course they are one leap ahead since they always had the closest association with Rachmaninoff's music through Gutheil, Rachmaninoff's long standing Russian publisher. In recent decades Boosey & Hawkes also acquired rights to the music Rachmaninoff originally published in the West through TAIR/Foley. In the past, the Viennese Universal Edition had the smart habit of launching Complete Critical Editions once the music of the Austro-German composers associated with them (Mahler, Berg etc.) came out of copyright. So far however, the Complete Critical Edition of Rachmaninoff's music published by Russian Music Publishing and distributed by Boosey & Hawkes has pogressed but slowly. Among Rachmaninoff scholars the editorial principles of this edition have also been subject to some debate. For the moment Boosey & Hawkes seems to have sidestepped the discussion by issuing The Authentic Collection and a Solo Piano Collection. The Authentic Collection is a selection of highlights from the 'Authentic Edition' mainly based on the editions proofread and authorised by the composer himself and painstakingly checked by the eminent Robert Threlfall. Alongside the new collection the Authentic Edition has been reprinted. http://www.boosey.com/teaching/news/Rachmaninoff-The-Authentic-Collection-Selected-Highlights-from-the-Solo-Piano-Works/100314

The Solo Piano Collection contains themes from some of Rachmaninoff's best-loved piano compositions including Piano concertos nos 2 & 3, Preludes and Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. These are presented alongside new arrangements of vocal, chamber and orchestral works such as Vocalise, Vespers, Aleko, and Symphonies nos 2 & 3. http://www.boosey.com/teaching/news/New-Rachmaninoff-Publication-Solo-Piano-Collection/100275 G. Henle Verlag has just 'welcomed' Rachmaninoff into its Urtext Catalogue. The editors claim that all relevant autograph scores have been consulted, that rare Russian, Greek and American first editions have been taken into account and the support of the Moscow Glinka Museum as well as the Library of Congress. Fingerings were provided by no one less than Marc-André Hamelin. http://www.henle.de/de/suche/index.html?Komponisten=P-R&Komponist=Rachmaninow%2C+Sergej In a new CD, Book and Concert review section which, we hope to launch before summer on the website of The Rachmaninoff Network, Rachmaninoff specialists will review these new publications.
